Advancing Civic Participation Through Holocaust Education

Studying the Holocaust imparts essential lessons of civic values, including justice, tolerance, and the importance of democratic liberties. This program examines how lessons of history can instill the importance of civic action in young people from all backgrounds. By using Echoes pedagogical approach and examining the rise of the Nazi party, participants bridge memory into action and inspire students to participate in political processes in their community. 

Empowering Our Students Via Children's Literature

Dr. Danné Davis, Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning, Montclair State University and Mrs. Danielle Guli, K-8 Literacy and Social Studies Coach for Chester School District and Montclair State University Adjunct, will share resources and innovative strategies aligned with the NJSLS and the NJ Holocaust Education mandate to help elementary students grow as responsible individuals who recognize, respect, and value differences.

Through this program, attendees will:

1. Enhance personal knowledge about the Holocaust, including the history of antisemitism.
2. Discover and utilize classroom-ready assets, including lessons plans and visual history testimonies.
3. Receive age and grade appropriate pedagogy and adjustments.
4. Explore the motivations of groups and individuals to better understand how one can shift from a bystander role to an upstander role.
5. Connect case studies on choices and complicity during the Holocaust to today and foster positive student action.
6. Understand how bystanders and upstanders roles manifested themselves during the Holocaust.
