Guest Artist Biography: Izzy Gleicher
Isabel (Izzy) Lepanto Gleicher is a flutist, composer, and visual artist praised by The New York Times as “excellent” and by composer John Zorn as “inspiring” and “stunningly musical.” Izzy is an artist member of International Contemporary Ensemble, Wild Up, One Found Sound, Sylvan Winds, and ShoutHouse. Her performance credits include the MET Gala with Lizzo, NPR’s Tiny Desk, Lincoln Center Summer for the City, Big Ears Festival, Guggenheim Works & Process, TIME:SPANS, and SONIC MATTER. She has premiered works by Missy Mazzoli, Nathalie Joachim, Courtney Bryan, Du Yun, Steve Reich, George Lewis, and Jon Batiste.
Izzy’s compositional practice centers on through-composed, stream-of-consciousness structured improvisations using graphic and text notation, exploring the intersection of musical and visual art. She has curated original solo sets for the Miller Theatre’s Pop-Up series, Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, ChamberQUEERantine Virtual Festival, and George Mason University’s Mason Arts at Home, and contributed to Metropolis Ensemble’s perpetual sonic installation Flame Keepers.
Her recordings include Wild Up’s Grammy-nominated Julius Eastman Vol. 2: Joy Boy and Vol. 1: Femenine, Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Aequa, Infinity Shred’s Shred Offline, and San Fermin’s The Cormorant and Jackrabbit.
An avid educator, Izzy is a teaching artist with Project Music Heals Us: Music for the Future, a nonprofit organization that brings interactive music education to carceral systems. She also held teaching artist positions with New York Philharmonic Education and American Composers Orchestra.
Beyond music, Izzy competed on Big Brother 25, exiting on Day 44 in a pig costume, and finished fourth with her wife, Paige, on The Amazing Race 38, becoming the show’s highest-ranking lesbian couple.
