Biography

Chris Hall joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as Principal Tuba in 1996, a position he held until his retirement in 2024. Before his tenure with the Met, Hall was an active freelance musician in the Chicago area, performing with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and serving as an extra musician with both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony. In the early 1990s, he won two international solo competitions, establishing himself as a distinguished soloist. Hall also contributed to the soundtrack of John Williams’ “Saving Private Ryan,” where his artistry was featured prominently on the piece “Hymn to the Fallen.” In 2006, the composer Charles Wuorinen asked Hall to premiere a new work, “Never Again the Same,” for bass voice and tuba. Hall was later invited by Wuorinen to record the piece for its first CD release. Hall continues to maintain a private teaching studio, sharing his expertise and experience with the next generation of musicians.
