Research
Andriy Fomin is a classicist who specializes in Greek and Roman historiography. He has earned his advanced degrees, an Ed.M. (Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education) and a Ph.D. (Classics), at Rutgers University. He has held fellowships at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and at the American Research Center in Sofia, and has been a research fellow at the University of Konstanz.
His scholarly interests in the field of Classics include Greek literature of the Roman period, social, cultural, and intellectual history of the Severan age (193-235 CE), and the Second Sophistic. His main focus is on the late second/early third century CE Roman historian Dio Cassius. His doctoral dissertation was devoted to investigating the treatment of the cultural and intellectual heritage of classical antiquity in the Second Sophistic (the Greek cultural revolution in the Roman empire during the first three centuries CE) and in particular Dio Cassius’ intellectual contribution to the development of Greco-Roman historiography.
He takes interest in new pedagogical approaches, and during 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 academic years he was a participant of the Engaged Teaching Fellows Program run by the Research Academy for University Teaching at MSU.
Dr. Fomin has taught courses on the civilizations of Greece and Rome, Classical mythology, as well as Latin and Ancient Greek languages. In Spring 2026, he shall be teaching one online section of Troy and the Trojan War (HUMN 115).
