Research Training and Certification

All investigators, staff and students who participate or engage in research (funded or unfunded) involving the use of animals are required to train in the appropriate care and use of animals. 

Montclair State University has arranged for the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) web-based courses to satisfy this requirement. 

During CITI registration, you will be asked a series of questions about the nature of your research.  Answer the questions as they pertain to your research, and for the animal-related questions:

1. “Will your research involve the use of animals?” - Indicate if you will be working in the laboratory or in the field (you may choose both):
   • Lab/Vivarium Researcher (choosing this option will automatically register you for the Animal Biosafety CITI course
   • Field/Wildlife Researcher
2. “Please select any animal-specific courses you may need” - Check the box to select the animal-specific (species) course you need. You may choose more than one.  

In order to earn the course training certificate, you must complete all required course modules.

*Note: Anyone working in the CELS Vivarium must complete the CITI Animal Biosafety course.
