Weston Science Scholars
The Weston Science Scholars Program is a summer experience based learning opportunity for Montclair High School’s ninth, tenth and eleventh graders. High achieving students specifically in science, mathematics and related fields are given the opportunity to learn science by doing science. The partnership between Montclair State University and Montclair Public Schools is made possible by Judy and Josh Weston and family. The Weston Program at Montclair State University fosters a community of thinkers who ask tough questions and embrace new ideas.

Admissions Criteria
- Ninth, tenth and eleventh graders can apply.
- A serious interest and superior skills in science and mathematics fields. Recent grades and other indicators will be assessed.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Determined by an essay and a formal interview.
- Personal qualities: hard-working, responsible, enthusiastic and able to follow directions while working well with others
- 20 hours of community service approved by the director and co-director. Hours must be completed by Tuesday December 18, 2026
This program offers 7.5 high school credits upon completion as a science elective, to be posted on a scholar’s transcript.
How to Apply
- Fill out the application.
- Have your teachers fill out Teacher Recommendation forms. They will receive an email to provide their recommendation when you submit the form
- Write an essay that answers the following questions:
- Why do you want to participate in the Weston Science Scholars Program?
- What do you hope to get out of it or achieve?
- How will this benefit you in the future?
- What are your expectations both emotionally and academically?
- What can you contribute to the program?
Your essay should be well organized, with cohesive concepts based on honesty, passion and past scientific experiences. The essay should be one page, double-spaced using Times New Roman size 12 font face with a .5 inch left/right margin.
Please be prepared to discuss your essay at your interview!
After Applying
Once the application is submitted, applicants will be contacted by email with date/time for an interview. All interviews will be conducted during lunch hours or via zoom during the evening.
45 scholars will be chosen for this program.
This program offers 7.5 high school science elective credits upon completion. Credits are awarded based on contact hours and will be deducted for scholars missing more than two field trips.
Tuition Required: $1150.00
Tuition must be paid in full by May 1
If the total amount is not paid by this date, students will not be allowed to participate in the program. Tuition is NON-REFUNDABLE.
Student Responsibilities
- Attend and participate in all scheduled activities (classes, seminars, laboratories, homework, community service, colloquia field trip events, etc.), with one (1) missed day during the three-week program
- Earned credits, 7.5 max, will be reduced if the minimum amount of hours is not met. A student not complying with the Montclair High School Code of Student Conduct will be expelled from the program.
- Attendance is required for the entire three-week research component as research depends on the full participation of all members.
- Early departure or extended absences will result in reduction of credits.
- An explanation of credit reduction will be provided to your guidance counselor.
Weekly Schedule
- Monday through Thursday: 8:30 am to 2pm
- Friday, Field trips: 9:00 am to 2 or 3 pm
