SEEDS Curriculum Faculty Resources

Education is a process of self-discovery and growth. Montclair's SEEDS Curriculum encourages students to uncover what excites and motivates them. Our world faces significant social, cultural, and environmental challenges and needs citizens with passion and purpose who think critically and creatively, communicate clearly, and act ethically. The SEEDS Curriculum strengthens and builds upon students’ existing skills and teach them new ways to embrace the world around them.

SEEDS Values

The SEEDS Curriculum is a highly customizable academic framework that is a key part of the undergraduate experience, providing students with an immersive experience and faculty support along the way. Our curriculum is rooted in five core values designed to give students insight into multiple viewpoints, preparing them to connect and work well in any community or profession.

Educated Citizenry (Critical Information Literacy)

Students will learn to assess, produce, and communicate knowledge as informed and responsible citizens, and learn to critically evaluate the sociopolitical structures that influence information creation.

Engagement, Agency, and Leadership

Students will learn how to engage with issues in their communities and develop the confidence and strategies to become leaders and contribute to the public good.

Diversity and Intercultural Competency

Students will develop the ability to understand diverse cultural contexts and to communicate and function within them.

Self-Discovery and Self-Care

Students will be introduced to multiple disciplinary approaches towards achieving a healthy, meaningful, and productive life, and, along the way, develop a sense of self.

SEEDS Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

The SEEDS Curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad educational foundation through two required pathways while supporting the development of the knowledge, skills and perspectives necessary for academic success, professional growth and engaged citizenship. Through coursework across multiple disciplines, undergraduate students gain exposure to diverse ways of thinking and develop competencies that complement their major. Students cannot choose to complete the same Learning Outcome more than once.

Creative mark for SEEDS Curriculum Foundations pathway.

Foundations (15-18 cr)

Foundations courses introduce students to essential areas of learning, including written and oral communication, and analytical reasoning. Through coursework in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and related disciplines, students develop the foundational knowledge and intellectual skills needed to engage critically with complex questions, diverse perspectives, and contemporary challenges. All Foundations SLOs are required.

Effective Writing I (PDF) (3 cr)
Effective Writing II (PDF) (3 cr)
Interactive Communication (PDF) (3 cr)
Quantitative Reasoning (PDF) (3 cr)
Political and Civic Life (PDF) (3 cr)
World Language and Intercultural Competency (PDF) (3-6 cr)
- Students who can demonstrate intermediate proficiency in a foreign language can fill this requirement with only 3 credits. Those who choose to start the study of a new language are required to take 6 credits.

Creative mark for SEEDS Curriculum Explorations pathway.

Explorations (12 cr)

Explorations courses build upon the Foundations curriculum by encouraging students to engage more deeply with areas of interest while strengthening critical thinking, problem-solving and advanced communication skills. Through focused study across disciplines, students deepen their understanding of complex issues, broaden their perspectives and connect their academic experiences with their interests and future goals. 12 credits are required across four of the six SLOs.

Explorations Learning Outcome Requirements:
