Where To Start

Whether you need immediate assistance, medical care or time to explore your options, support is available. You are not alone, and you can choose what feels right for you.

Immediate Support and Next Steps

Experiencing sexual misconduct can be overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate it alone. The information below outlines immediate safety considerations, medical care options, and available support resources so you can make informed decisions at your own pace.

Step 1: Make Sure Your Safe

Your safety is the top priority. If you are in immediate danger, contact:

University Police: 973-655-5222 (On campus)
Emergency Services: 911 (Off campus)

Step 2: Do You Need Medical Attention?

You can receive care at any medical facility. The Student Health Center has trained staff who can support survivors of sexual misconduct.

You may also request a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) to:

Conduct a confidential forensic exam.
Collect evidence.
Treat injuries.
Provide prevention for infections and pregnancy.

You do not need to file a report to receive a medical exam.

Please Note

Try to seek care as soon as possible, ideally within 120 hours (5 days).
If possible, avoid washing or changing clothes before an exam.
Bring clothing or items in a clean paper bag, if available.
Even after 120 hours, you can still receive care and support.

Step 3: Explore Your Options

You may want to speak with someone confidentially before deciding what to do next. You have options, and you can take your time.

You can choose one, both, or neither. The decision is yours.

Reporting/ Recourse Options

If you choose to take action, there are multiple reporting options available. These are independent, meaning you can pursue one, multiple or none. You may also choose to participate in both University and external processes at the same time. You can report at any time, even if you are not ready right now.

University Complaint (Title IX Process)

File a formal complaint with the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Title IX Coordinator to initiate an on-campus investigation and conduct process. An independent investigation will be conducted once a signed complaint is received.

Police Report (Criminal Investigation)

File a police report to initiate a criminal investigation. University Police are available 24/7 and are trained in trauma-informed care. Call 973-655-5222 (located next to the Red Hawk Deck).

Academic, Housing and Campus Support

If you need support navigating your academic or living situation, the University can assist with:

Academic accommodations (extensions, exam adjustments).
Housing changes or alternative arrangements.
No Contact Orders between students.
Referrals to campus resources such as Financial Aid, the Disability Resource Center, or International Services.

You do not need to file a formal complaint to request this support.
