Membership

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at Montclair is composed of faculty, research staff, biosafety professionals, and subject matter experts with expertise in biological research, laboratory safety, and regulatory compliance. The Committee plays a vital role in reviewing and overseeing research involving biohazardous materials, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids, infectious agents, and other biological hazards to ensure research is conducted safely, responsibly, and in accordance with applicable federal regulations, institutional policies, and best practices.

Committee Roles and Responsibilities

The IBC Chair leads the Institutional Biosafety Committee and facilitates the review and oversight of biosafety-related research activities. This role helps ensure regulatory compliance and promotes a culture of safety in research.

IBC Chair: Peter Hosick

The Biosafety Officer provides expertise on the safe handling and use of biological materials in research and serves as a key resource to the Institutional Biosafety Committee. The position helps ensure compliance with applicable regulations while promoting a safe research environment for the university community.

Biosafety Officer: Gena Coffey

The IBC is made up of multiple Scientific and Non-Scientific members, who are both from the University and non-affiliated. These members review submissions and attend board meetings as needed.

The IBC Administrator provides administrative support for the Institutional Biosafety Committee by coordinating protocol reviews, committee meetings, communications, and recordkeeping. This role helps ensure efficient committee operations and compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
